Candle Gazing

Concentration

How to

Sit at arm's length from a steady candle flame at eye level in a dark room. Gaze at the flame without blinking for as long as comfortable, then close the eyes and hold the afterimage in the mind's eye until it fades.

Benefits

  • Sharpens single-pointed concentration quickly
  • Traditionally used to prepare the mind for deeper stillness
  • A vivid alternative for those who find breath-based focus too subtle

Practice

Start with 30-60 seconds of gazing before closing the eyes; stop and rest the eyes if they water heavily or strain.
