Standing Meditation

Zhan Zhuang

Movement

How to

Stand with knees slightly bent, arms rounded as if holding a large ball, and hold the posture motionless while attention rests on the sensations of effort and balance throughout the body.

Benefits

  • Builds unusual stillness and endurance through mild physical effort
  • A foundational qigong practice used to cultivate internal awareness
  • The physical discomfort that arises becomes a direct object of practice

Practice

Start with 3-5 minutes and build gradually; stop if sharp pain (rather than muscular fatigue) appears in the knees.
